Franklin Turtle, known as Benjamin in French-Canadian releases, is the protagonist of Franklin. He is the son of Mr. Turtle and Mrs. Turtle and the 7 year old (6 before "Franklin's Birthday Party") big brother of Harriet Turtle. He is voiced by Noah Reid, and later Cole Caplan in the original series, Cameron Ansell in Franklin and the Turtle Lake Treasure, Graeme Jokic in Franklin and Friends, William Healy in the Franklin and Friends specials and Lizzie Waterworth in the UK dub.

As a member of The Super Cluepers, Franklin is known as the Green Wonder.

Description[]

Franklin is an imaginative and friendly seven-year-old turtle who, as his television stories and books always begin, "could count by twos and tie his shoes". He's got hard shell on the outside and a sensitive and soft heart on the inside, He is a big brother with a big group of friends. Franklin's parents guide him along the way to help him make the right decisions and be the best he can be. He loves his family and friends very much and enjoys going to school and learning new things. He's best friends with Bear who he enjoys playing with and spends most of his time with. He's also very close with his friend Snail who looks up to him like a big brother. Franklin's curiosity can sometimes get him in trouble, but he always makes it right in the end.

Looks[]

Franklin is mostly green. He has a large shell colored yellow and brown. His eyes are brown with black pupils. He wears a red cap and red neckerchief (1997 series) He wears a red cap and red neckerchief with white polka dots (2011 series). He is 4 feet tall.

Personality[]

A young turtle with a big imagination, Franklin tends to be very kind and lovable, and he has a large circle of friends, but also tends to keep things to himself at times. He sometimes can be a little forgetful and somewhat accident prone and sulky, but he shows his deep caring for (usually) his friends. Franklin's friends and his parents generally help to bring out the best in him, and he's also now a big brother (a desire he had expressed multiple times in the past). He takes good care of his pet goldfish, Goldie, and also has a stuffed dog named Sam who, despite growing older, he still hangs onto and communicates with.

Catchphrases[]

  • "Oh, boy!" (1997 series)
  • "Yippee!" (1997 series)
  • "Hey...!" (1997 series, curious or surprised)
  • "Awww, no! Not again!" (1997 series, in despair)

Trivia[]

  • Despite being a turtle, he is capable of removing his shell along with the other members of his family. Real life turtles do not do this as their shell is part of their spinal cord. [2] In Franklin and Friends, however, his shell is a fixed part of his body.
  • Unlike his other friends, he's the only one that's not named for the animal that he represents, he would originally be called "Turtle", although it is used in his surname (known to be his last name).[3]
  • Franklin's favorite color is red. [4][5]
  • Franklin's favorite sports are soccer and baseball. [6]
  • His best friend is Bear. [7]
  • Franklin was sad that Otter moved away. [8]
  • Franklin can count by twos and tie his shoes.[9] Despite this, he, like the other characters, is typically depicted not wearing any shoes, though he is seen wearing shoes in the book Franklin and Harriet.
  • Franklin misses Otter. [10]
  • Franklin can play the recorder [11], the piano [12], the bell [13] and the guitar [14].
  • Franklin's favorite school subject is math.
  • Franklin can zip zippers and button buttons, though once again, he is not usually depicted wearing either.
  • Franklin is sometimes seen not wearing his red cap, in early episodes, he used to wear a red cap with a baseball and bat on the front, then in later episodes, he wears his red cap with a picture of a sunrise or sunset on it.
  • Franklin is the only character to appear in every story from both Franklin and the spinoff series Franklin and Friends. None of Franklin's friends appear in the story "Franklin in the Dark," the only other regular characters in that story being his parents Mr. and Mrs. Turtle. However, Franklin's parents are absent from other stories such as "Franklin Goes to Day Camp." Additionally, almost all scenes within the franchise are presented from Franklin's point-of-view, though Back to School with Franklin breaks from this format by presenting scenes from Harriet's point-of-view in which Franklin is entirely absent.
  • It may sound ironic, but Franklin was in "those" relationships with his cousin, whom he had no idea she was his cousin.
